------------------------------------------------------------------

It's hard to describe that feeling of finding yourself genuinely stopped in your tracks encountering new (or new to you) artists in a small community. You remember these moments, I know I do. They are thrilling first impressions, always sating. I have never understood the tendency of some old schoolers to look down upon new or young artists. Surely, these changing goalposts offer guidance and inspiration in one's own way forward.

One such big game changer was Learning.

Coming in step with the emergent Sharktooth Records scene, Learning transposed the inverted rock & roll of a parallel universe. Caleb, Avery and William had discovered new DNA and together grew a behemoth. I'm so thankful that Wooden Wives' then unbeknownst final show included them on the bill; that some alignment of stars I no longer remember, granted opportunity to organize the craft festival Lyke Wake Dirge '15, celebrating the release of their excellent Dirger record; for their clarity of vision and work ethic, reflected in the support of family who enfranchised their efforts; even for a rare wild sighting of hardcore alter ego Scars Of The Orca.

This single comes following nomination by Corey Bonnevie in the David R. Elliott initiated Locals Covering Locals. While largely a streamed video effort, Corey set the precedent for recorded installments, so I split the difference. Instrumentation keeps to barest bones, tracked green and on the fly, and left unmastered, with only additional percussion added compliments of Everlasting Emily Saab.

The artwork for this single stems from my very first new comic purchase, and first breech of appropriate media content brought home. Too many melting faces and disemboweled dummies for one funnybook, who knew? These encounters with negotiation or surprise, of birth, inception or arrest, these will always be moments of learning. To remain open to them is to continue giving thanks.

Usse Saint John, New Brunswick

These small plastic puzzles, similar to the gewgaws given away by petroleum and detergent manufacturers, were found over a wide area, as if they had fallen from the sky. Millions had been produced, although their purpose was hard to see. Later it was found that unusual objects could be made from them. ... more
